Finding Charts

Notes

J0910-0414 is a newly identified quasar at z>~6.7 on the night of April 16th. We only have a very low S/N FIRE longslit spectrum for it and we have no idea whether it is a BAL or not. Please check the first DEIMOS exposure, if it is a BAL, just take one hour exposure to get a spectrum for publication. If it is not a BAL, it might be interesting, the Ly-alpha emission line seems pretty weak, please take 2-3 hrs exposure on it.

J1216+4519 is a quasar at z=6.6, we have already have 1.5 hrs KECK/LRIS on it. So, just one hour DEIMOS is probably good enough.

The priority of quasar candidates: 1 is better than 2 and 3.

z~5 QSO Backups: J0916 is a quasar, J1503 is a candidates

Notes

These are potential z=7.2-7.3 QSOs. The ly-alpha break will be betweem 9900A and 10100A. I'm not sure about the performance of DEIMOS at the edge of the wavelength coverage. However, something like a ~15-20min exposure should already show if there is a break or not. J0734p4631_PR1 has the highest priority and it's setting fast.

The VIKING candidates is expected to at z~<6.5 and it's one of the last VIKING candidates (i.e. is needed to complete the survey and publish the LF).

Strategy:

Exposure times: B=3000s, R=300s, I=300s; Desired sensitivity B=27.5mag, R=25mag, I=25mag (3 sigma). Integration split in short exposures, e.g. 180s ?

Scheduling:

This program requires dark time. Due to the blue filter and the depth of the observations, the Moon dominates the sky background and has to be below the horizon. Since it's waxing Moon, conditions in the first night are substantially more favorable than in the last night (~1/3 sky background). Still, the first hours of the night are not ideal.

Required calibrations:

Bias for imaging chip areas, Skyflats in BRI filters -- Afternoon focus series taken with GOH-X mask -- Sequence of Skyflats should start ~10m after sunset with bluest filter

Notes

Stripes in CCD3A bias (only Direct mode) (2017-Jun-23): CCD3, amplifier A, has been showing horizontal stripes in the bias during the last couple of weeks. We have been working on fixing the issue, but it is still there. This does not affect spectroscopic data, because DEIMOS only uses the B amplifiers in spectroscopy mode. If your program is in direct imaging mode, please ask your SA to change the readout in Direct mode to SINGLE:B.

MIRA in Direct and Spectroscopy mode (2016-Nov-22): On October 14th and November 16th we performed serveral engineering tests to investigate the DEIMOS image quality. Test results show that the corrections suggested by MIRA are different when MIRA is run with a grating in Zeroth Order than when it is run with the Mirror. Therefore, for those programs requiring Direct and Spectroscopy mode on the same night, we recommend the following: Have the OA run a MIRA script in Direct mode (with the Mirror in the optical path) to be used in the Direct imaging part of the program. Have the OA run a MIRA script with the grating in Zeroth Order for the Spectroscopy part of the program.

Plate scale in focal plane is 0.728 mm/arcsec. Plate scale in detector plane is 0.1185 arcsec/pixel. Documentation on the Website is just about to improve.

Field Rotation:

PA = PA_sky = ROTDEST = 0 corresponds to Slits oriented in North-South, Guider to the East, vignetted corner to the West. PA increases from North to East.

Keyword 'ROTDEST' in FITS Header however corresponds to actual PA - 90 degree

Focusing:

Focus loop over Pinhole Mask delivers optimal focus position for each position in the FoV. One has to pick a good compromise that is adequate for the whole FoV. It is unclear, if Focus is automatically adapted for different Filters, Temperature, etc.

Domeflats:

Recepie works well, just needs more time for B filter.

FoV description files:

Given and here and here but have X-axis flipped with respect to XIM / YIM coordinate system.

Amplifiers:

Set to single amp readout with command 'oneamp B'. Changing the Exposure time will reset to default two-amp mode! Each change of Exposure time requires a manual setting of the readout mode to 'single B'. The symbol in the DEIMOS Dashboard displays the current readout mode.
